Innovation and sustainability are driven by collaboration

31 March, 2026

We took part in the 13th Sustainable Chemistry Conference promoted by Federchimica, an annual event dedicated to fostering synergies between industry and research to address sustainability challenges, held today in Milan.

Collaboration between industry and academia is the key driver of concrete and sustainable innovation. It is through this integration of expertise and perspectives that solutions capable of generating real impact are developed.

We shared our experience of collaboration with the CREST – Catalytic Reaction Engineering for Sustainable Technologies research group at DISAT (Department of Applied Science and Technology) of the Politecnico di Torino, presenting the EcoChem Innovations R&D project, funded by the SWIch call of the Piedmont Region.

Esseco Srl, represented by Daniela Colombo, and the Politecnico di Torino, with Prof. Fabio Deorsola, presented the project “Energy efficiency and water consumption reduction in a sulfur dioxide production plant”: a structural upgrade of the plant that enables the recovery of process energy and a significant reduction in water consumption through an innovative closed-loop system.

It is precisely from this integration of industrial expertise and scientific research that the most effective solutions for increasingly sustainable chemistry emerge: a model that must be further promoted, as it is through collaboration between industry and academia that innovation, technology transfer, and competitiveness are built.
